Honor The Elders Wellness Training & Therapy
Delivering Health Through Nutrition
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Delivering Health through Nutrition is a program that utilizes the latest
research and knowledge in nutrition and dietetics to restore health and
wellness through dietary intake. The program will be administered by nationally
certified dietitians in cooperation with staff dietitians and
nutritionists.
Program Benefits
As our bodies age, they become less efficient in digesting and absorbing
nutrients. At the same time, our nutritional needs become more specific and
essential. We are less able to recover from imbalances, and are more prone to
require prescription drugs, which often causes additional dietary and digestive
complications. Enhanced support for particular nutritional needs can halt the
progression of weight loss, frailty and weakness in the senior population.
There are numerous nutritional solutions for particular ailments, but the
health and balance in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is essential for the
proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. It also provides a first line of
defense against numerous harmful organisms. Intake of specific nutrients, such
as fiber, beneficial bacteria from products like yogurt and other immune
enhancing components can restore balance in the gastrointestinal tract,
resulting in greater overall health.
Program
Logistics
A typical dietetic evaluation lasts between 30 minutes to one hour. The
nutritionists will work in cooperation with nursing home staff to identify
appropriate senior candidates. They will review medical records and make
recommendations on specific foods, medical foods, functional foods and other
complementary dietary measures that would improve the gastrointestinal
functioning and nutrient absorption of senior clients.
Program
Evaluation
Pilot Program. We suggest a 90 day evaluation period to assess the benefits of
Delivering Health Through Nutrition. Evaluation will include pre-treatment and
post-treatment evaluation of GI health and nutritional assessment. Reductions
in the quantity of medications and laxatives, reduced incidence of GI-related
infections, weight gain as well as quality of life will be determined in
collaboration with nursing home staff and senior participants.
